A fortnight after making his professional debut, South Africa's Michael Van Niekerk delivered a historic performance at the 2026 AGP Philippines Pro, securing an impressive 4th place finish in Men's Physique.

This result is groundbreaking for South African bodybuilding. It marks the highest placement ever achieved by a South African Men's Physique competitor in an IFBB Pro show – a feat that places Van Niekerk firmly at the top of the Mens Physique SA ranking above Tristan van Der Bijl and Tyrone Jagger with an average of 8.0.

The Philippines Pro, held in Manila, saw Van Niekerk step on stage and compete against some decent Men's Physique athletes. The show was won by Turkey's Talha Kilic, with Karym Nathan Saripada of the Philippines taking 2nd and Muhammad Rifqi of Indonesia rounding out the top 3. Van Niekerk was judged 4th, ahead of a competitive international field.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is its context. Only weeks earlier, at the Thailand Pro, Van Niekerk placed 12th in what was his debut professional show. To leap from 12th to 4th in such a short space of time demonstrates growth and determination.

The 6'1" athlete is renowned for packing significant muscle on his tall frame, with his back as a standout feature – praised for its density and completeness. These physical attributes, combined with his relentless work ethic, are clearly impressing international judges.

Van Niekerk's path to this historic moment has been anything but straightforward.
He first emerged on my radar in 2022, winning the NPC Pretoria Men's Physique overall title. That year, he was part of an intense rivalry with fellow competitor Tristan Marais, with both athletes working for the ultimate prize – the IFBB Pro Card. Ultimately, that card went to Tyrone Jagger, and Van Niekerk seemed to disappear from the competitive radar.
After that quiet period, he resurfaced unexpectedly in early 2025. Entering a Pro Qualifier in Iraq, Van Niekerk defied expectations and emerged victorious, finally securing his IFBB Pro status. He is now based full-time in Kuwait, where he has dedicated himself to chasing his bodybuilding dreams.
